Cool off some of that August heat with these three wines from Central Market.
With July’s rainy respite evidently behind up and the heat of August looming, we searched the cool confines of Central Market and their extensive wine department to find three of the most refreshing and summer-friendly wines to help beat the heat. With the help of Greg Forshay, Beer and Wine Manager at Central Market at Preston and Royal, we discovered three different options that will help cool off some of that relentless August heat.
Domaine Montru Muscadet
This crisp and refreshing wine is a Central Market Selection, and is sourced directly from the 30-acre Domaine in France’s Loire Valley. Only 2,000 cases of this wine were shipped to the US, and in Texas they can only be found at Central Market. The 100-percent Melon de Burgogne grapes were grown on 30-year-old vines, and the hints of cantaloupe provide a refreshing note to this crisp wine.
“The cantaloupe notes are delightful, and very refreshing,” Forshay observes. “This is a wine that’s great for lighter fare. A light salad or garden salad with this wine would be absolutely lovely.”
And it’s easy on the pocketbook, too – at $9.95, this Muscadet can give any summertime meal a touch of elegance without breaking the bank.
Domaine Gueneau Sancerre
About two hours South of Paris lies Domaine Gueneau Estate. Located in Sury de Vaux, the Sancerre produced on this 24-acre estate is 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc and is exclusive to Central Market in Texas. More well-rounded than Sauvignon Blanc wines from New Zealand, this Sancerre is perfect with grilled fish or even oysters or ceviche. And the fact that it comes in under $20 makes it a particular value, according to Forshay.
“Most sancerres will go well into the mid-twenty-dollar range and up,” he says. “So this one, with an everyday retail at $17.95, is really special, especially since I think this is every bit as good as the ones that are $25 and up.”
Only 4,000 cases of this Sancerre were produced this year. The limited production provides an opportunity to taste a unique wine for any summertime situation.
Chateau Paradis Rose
As Greg observes, rose is making a comeback in a strong way, and this particular wine from Northeast Provence in France is an ideal example of why they’re becoming such popular options. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet, the grapes are grown on a 45-acre estate and translate to a wine that is refreshing with a fruity finish that pairs perfectly with spicy dishes – and for $14.95, at that.
“It’s a very unique and diverse blend with a really pretty salmon-pink hue,” Greg notes. “It’s very bright – you get some strawberry and bright cherry, rose petal notes. This is one you could just sit and enjoy; if you don’t have anything to eat with it, that’s fine. This is a wine that’s just a joy to have on its own.”
